⚠️ Active water in your basement? Call for priority service → (514) 730-7107
Emergency
What to do right away
Cut the power in the basement if water is near outlets, an electrical panel or plugged-in appliances.
Remove the water with a wet vacuum or a pump, and move boxes, rugs and furniture out.
Find where the water comes from: a crack in the wall, the joint between wall and floor, the floor drain, a basement window. Take photos.
Check outside: overflowing gutters, downspouts emptying against the house, ground sloping toward the foundation.
Call your insurer if belongings are damaged, then a specialist to fix the cause before the next rain.
If water is actively coming in, call us at (514) 730-7107: urgent situations get priority.
Diagnosis
The 6 most common causes
Clogged or collapsed French drain
Water builds up around the foundation instead of draining away. Typical sign: water at the wall-floor joint after rain or during the thaw. French drain
Foundation crack
A vertical or diagonal crack that seeps after rain. In the vast majority of cases it is sealed by injection from inside, with no excavation. Crack repair
Foundation never waterproofed
Concrete is porous. Without a membrane, moisture goes through the wall and leaves white efflorescence stains. Waterproofing
Iron ochre
An orange, slimy deposit that clogs the drain. It often shows in the sump pit or at the drain outlet. Camera inspection
Gutters and ground slope
Downspouts emptying at the foot of the wall, or ground sloping toward the house, send water straight onto the foundation.
Sewer backup
If water comes up through the floor drain, the problem often comes from the sewer system. A well-maintained backwater valve protects against it.
Our method
How we find the real cause
Replacing a drain is expensive, and it is not always the right fix. That is why every job starts with a diagnosis:
→On-site visit and review of water marks, inside and outside
→HD camera inspection of the drain, with a video report that is yours to keep
→Crack classification: stable, active or structural
→Written recommendation: cleaning, injection, drain replacement or membrane, based on what the inspection shows
If your drain is in good shape, we tell you. You leave with your video report.
Insurance
Is it covered by my insurance?
It depends on the cause and on your policy. In Quebec, many home insurance policies treat water coming through the foundation, sewer backup and flooding differently, often with separate endorsements. Check your policy or call your insurer before the work.
Our inspection report and the drain video document the condition of your system and can help with your claim.
Frequently asked questions
Basement water leak
Is it normal to get water in the basement in spring?
+
No. During the thaw, the water table rises and tests the drain and the foundation. If water gets in, the drain is no longer carrying it away well enough, or a crack is giving it a path.
Can a leak be fixed without digging?
+
Often, yes. A crack is repaired by injection from inside, and a clogged drain can sometimes be cleaned. If the drain has collapsed, is made of clay or is fractured, it has to be dug up and replaced.
How long before mould appears?
+
Wet materials can grow mould within a few days. Dry the area quickly and fix the cause before redoing any finishing.
Do you handle emergencies?
+
Yes. If water is actively coming into your basement, call us at (514) 730-7107. We prioritize urgent situations in Montreal, Laval and the North Shore.
